In Animals Go to War: From Dogs to Dolphins, author J.P. O'Malley tells the extraordinary stories of these animals and their handlers. He draws on firsthand accounts, historical documents, and interviews with veterans to paint a vivid picture of the animals' contributions to the war effort.

O'Malley's book is a fascinating and moving tribute to the animals who have served in our armed forces. It is a must-read for anyone interested in military history, animal welfare, or the human-animal bond.

Dogs of War

Dogs have been used in warfare for centuries. They were used as scouts, messengers, and guard dogs in ancient times. In the Middle Ages, they were used to pull war carts and attack enemy soldiers. And in modern times, they have been used to detect explosives, track down enemy troops, and provide comfort to soldiers.

One of the most famous dogs of war is Rin Tin Tin. Rin Tin Tin was a German Shepherd who served in the US Army during World War I. He was found as a puppy on a battlefield in France and was adopted by an American soldier. Rin Tin Tin went on to become a Hollywood star, appearing in a number of films and television shows. He was also a goodwill ambassador for the US Army, visiting hospitals and meeting with soldiers.

Another famous dog of war is Lucca. Lucca is a German Shepherd who served in the US Marine Corps during the Iraq War. She was trained to detect explosives and track down enemy troops. Lucca saved the lives of many Marines during her deployment, and she was awarded the Purple Heart for her bravery.

Dolphins of War

Dolphins have been used in warfare for a relatively short period of time. The US Navy began training dolphins for military purposes in the 1960s. Dolphins are used to detect underwater mines and other threats to ships and submarines. They are also used to recover objects from the ocean floor and to perform surveillance missions.

One of the most famous dolphins in the US Navy is Tuffy. Tuffy is a bottlenose dolphin who served for 20 years. He was trained to detect underwater mines and he participated in a number of missions, including the Persian Gulf War. Tuffy retired from the Navy in 2005 and he now lives at the National Aquarium in Baltimore.

Another famous dolphin in the US Navy is Winter. Winter is a bottlenose dolphin who lost her tail in a crab trap when she was just a few months old. She was rescued by the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida and she was fitted with a prosthetic tail. Winter has since become a symbol of hope and resilience. She has starred in a number of films and television shows, and she has met with children and adults from all over the world.

Animals in War Today

  • Tracking: Animals are used to track down enemy troops and fugitives.
  • Surveillance: Animals are used to perform surveillance missions and provide early warning of enemy activity.
  • Combat support: Animals are used to provide comfort and support to soldiers.
